NYC Energy Benchmarking
The NYC Benchmarking Law requires owners of large buildings to annually measure their energy and water consumption and submit the data using ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager®. Some of the key components of the regulation are:
- The annual deadline is May 1st for previous year’s energy and water usage.
- Owners must request tenant utility data for the previous calendar year each January.
- Owners of buildings that are larger than 25,000 sq ft are required to benchmark.
- Penalties can include a $500 fine for missing the May 1st benchmarking deadline and additional $500 fines for each subsequent quarter, up to a maximum of $2,000.
